the Wayfinding Gallery: A Brief Explanation
According to the Web Style Guide, wayfinding is "the elements of the built environment that allow us to navigate successfully through complex spaces like cities and towns." It includes orientation, route decisions, mental mapping, and closure, all componenets necessary for a user to make a goal destination, plan a route, and reach the destination.
While traveling on a Washington State University Cross Country trip from Spokane, Washington, stopping in the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in Minnesota, and landing in Indianapolis, Indiana, I chose to photograph and critique the design of the airport terminals, the legibility of signage, and the degree of difficulty—or simplicity—of navigating the airport from gate to gate. The importance of simple navigation became critical for my team and me (and any other travelers on delayed flights, racing to catch a connecting flight) as we literally ran from Gate C7 to Gate G17.
